Generating Income from your Closet!

I was faced with the dilemma of what to do with extra clothes in my daughter's closet when she moved away from home. I wanted to find a way to generate some extra money for her new adult living expenses, and since my neighborhood doesn't allow garage or yard sales I turned to the internet for research.

While I found a lot of online options, there were definitely different factors to consider. I researched quite a few, but I ultimately decided on POSHMARK - You can access this website via your computer, sign up & buy items, but if you want to become an active seller you will need to download their app. It is very user friendly, and you can quickly set up your closet and list items for sale. Although it was primarily set up to sell women's clothing and accessories, I have come across children's and men's clothing, pet accessories and housewares!

Because it is a very social media site, I have been learning that it is very important to be active on the site, gain a lot of followers, follow a lot of people and participate in the many online themed "parties" that are hosted daily. My closet is relatively small, but after several months I have sold several items. It is my understanding that if I can get to 4000 followers, that that is a good basis number to help me start gaining new sales!

If you are wondering how it works, a potential buyer can buy your item or make an offer, that you can accept, reject or counter. If the sale is mutual, the company will email you a prepaid shipping label, you package it up and put it into the mail! If you sell your item for over $15.00 you keep 80%. If it sells below, they subtract a $2.95 fee and you keep the balance.

If you decide to sign up, please use this CODE NKLQC and you will receive an instant $5.00 credit to apply against a purchase! If you would like to see my closet, you can visit it HERE.

Happy selling!

Recycle Apple Products for Money

I discovered this recycling program today while looking through the Apple Store at refurbished items. Which, by the way is another great way to buy Apple products at a discount!

Apple will evaluate your used Apple electronics. They will either give you a gift card in the amount they value your item at, or they will recycle it for you at no charge. Either way it's a win-win!

Here is what their website says:

Get an Apple Store Gift Card for the value of your old device.

Turn that iPhone, iPad, or computer — Mac or PC — you’re not using anymore into something brand new. Send it to us and we’ll determine if it qualifies for reuse. If it does, that means your device has monetary value that we’ll apply to an Apple Store Gift Card, which you can use for purchases at any Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. If your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC doesn’t qualify for reuse, we’ll recycle it responsibly at no cost to you.

Turn Clutter Into Cash?

Is is possible to turn clutter into cash without leaving your home? I sure hope so, because I need to get rid of some stuff and a little extra cash flow would be amazing!

There are a lot of websites that  broker or promote for you. Of course this means that they will take a percentage, but heck, if it's sitting there not making any money, it's certainly not doing you any good!

For clothing, you can try websites such as thredup.com. After you register with them, they send you a bag to fill, you send them your clothes and they send you $$. Here is their website descriptioin:

"thredUP is the easiest way to save on great clothing brands and hand down clothing your family no longer wears for cash. We're like a consignment boutique - but simpler. On thredUP you can refresh your family's entire wardrobe online, without ever leaving your house.
Here's how it works:
SHOP: Browse thousands of like-new clothing items, which we've hand-selected and certified for quality. You'll find all your favorite brands discounted up to 80% off year-round. Shop »
CLEAN OUT: When your family has clothing they no longer wear (kids, juniors and women's), simply fill up a thredUP bag and put it on your doorstep. thredUP covers the shipping, and pays you for every item we can hand down to other families."
Other clothing sites are, threadflip.com, copius.com, poshmark.com and etsy.com.
If you are trying to sell furniture items, check out Charish.com. It is a virtual showroom for your used furniture. Once is sells, they send shippers to your door to take it away! It is also a great place to look for just the right thing you've always wanted!

If Musical Instruments are cluttering your home, check out usedinstrumentbuyer.com. Perhaps Johnny's tuba lessons didn't work out, so now you have somewhere to try and sell that!

Even cell phones can bring in extra cash. Look for an ecoATM. It's a kiosk that actually gives you cash on the spot for your cell phones.

Good luck selling your treasures!

Setting up an Apartment Inexpensively

Well, once again I have had to move my daughter. First home from college in Chicago, and now into Los Angeles to start life as a grown up!

One would think it would be easier the closer one is, but not in all cases. Take the bedroom for example. If I took the most economical route by moving the bed she currently has, not only would she be sleeping in a twin in her new apartment, when she comes home to visit there would be nowhere for her to sleep!

Not ever having seen the space, and hearing her tell me how small the room is, we decided that a platform bed would work best for several reasons. One, I only had to buy a mattress, not a box spring and two we found a bed design  that had storage drawers underneath. I found a very good price on the mattress at the Sears Outlet Store near me. I found the best price on the bed from Wayfair. Yes it came in 3 boxes and it took us about 3 hours to assemble, but it was kind of fun and we shared a few giggles.

I pulled a couple of childhood dressers down from the attic and we went to work sanding, painting and distressing them. Add a few cool knobs from World Market (in store they were all on sale) and you get a whole new grown up look! I also found an awesome steamer trunk at a home consignment store for under $100.00, so now she probably has more drawers than she knows what to do with!

Of course we pulled towels, sheets, bedding and such from what we had at home. I went shopping in my closets for cleaning supplies. I did have to spring for a vacuum, but thanks to Costco I got a good price on a suitable machine that had an instant coupon discount.

I know that we still have a long way to go with the bedroom, but she is sharing expenses with a roommate who moved in first, and already has most everything in the living room and kitchen. So for a change, maybe I can keep moving expenses down!
