Happy Valentine's Day!

Heartfelt wishes for a wonderful Valentine's Day!

I have a wonderful dinner planned for my sweetie. We are having Maine lobster tails, snow crab claws, Maryland lobster cakes, clam chowder and finishing it off with gelato balls for dessert. I redeemed a gift certificate that I got during Christmas 2009 (yes, it took me that long to find it!) to use at LobsterGram. I found a special offer for a "Sweetheart Deal" through Upromise, and applied a code for $10.00 off that I got online when I had problems processing my order!

I put less than $20.00 towards my order since I added several extra items over and above the value of the certificate.  I have ordered from them before and their food is excellent. Last time  I had live lobsters that arrived packaged in a foam container with dry ice. If you ever want to give a great gift certificate I highly recommend this company.

I hope that you have special plans for such a special day.

Hotels

Since I will be out of town for the big college move, I needed to book a hotel room for our stay. There are some pretty incredible values out there right now. A lot of it has to do with it being off season, but I am sure that the economy is playing a huge part.

As usual, I have loyalty points started with every hotel chain I have ever stayed in! This comes in handy for a free stay every once in a  while. Because we have travelled to Chicago for college frequently over the past couple of years, I usually stay at Best Western because it is fairly close to campus, has reasonable rates and is a good value. Is it luxurious? no, but it is nice enough to get the job done!

Using Hotels.com, through my Upromise account, I earned 4% back instantly. They are also offering 30% off their rates right now. A room I usually have to pay $98.00 for not including taxes and hotel fees only cost me $62.00. I could have had the room for 58.00 a night, but I chose a slighter higher room rate that includes a 24 hour cancellation refund option. Because of the bad weather in the Midwest right now I thought spending $4.00 more a night was good insurance! As usual, I always cross reference the nightly price on hotels.com with the hotel's actual website to be sure that I am getting the lowest rate.

Let's hope the weather warms up a bit!

Back to College Shopping

Well, my daughter is back to college in Chicago next weekend. This semester she is sharing an apartment with two other girls, and of course to make things more challenging it comes unfurnished! Since we live on the West Coast I needed furniture that wouldn't break the bank.

She actually came up with a great idea, using an inflatable mattress. So I will share my shopping strategy with you. I first researched them on Upromise to see which stores would automatically give my purchase a 1 - 3% rebate. I also needed to learn a lot about different options since I knew nothing about air mattresses. We narrowed it down to 5, then 3, then 1 and the hunt began.

We really liked the Intex Queen Comfort Frame Air Mattress with pump in black. Linens&Things had it for $239.00 with free shipping, so that was my price point to beat. I found the same item at Target for 129.99, but it only came in grey and it wasn't available instock for 2-4 weeks. No good! Taking the brand name, I searched through PriceGrabber.com and found it at three other websites ranging from from 108.99-119.00 shipped. Along the way I found another wonderful comparison website, ShopWiki.com, which I have now added to my "favorites" for shopping. I ultimately bought it at BudgetAirbeds.com because they had the lowest price of $114.74 shipped. The web page offered  Google Checkout as a payment option and by opening an account I received an instant $5.00 off, bring the price down to $109.64.

So the end result? I went from $239.00 down to $109.64, a grand savings of $129.36! Now there's more to spend on bedding, a desk, rug and other incidentals. I will update you on how this website performs on shipping the product!

Shoe Bargain!

Everyday I keep trying to check things off from the family Christmas list. Today I ordered a beautiful pair of Minnetonka Pile Lined Hard soled slippers for my mom.  I ended up purchasing them from www.shoebuy.com. I shopped through my Upromise online account and received some nice discounting. Even if you don't have a Upromise account, there are still some great bargains to be had.

The retail on this particular pair of moccasin styled slippers at shoebuy was $37.95. They offered me free shipping, free returns, no sales tax, an instant 10% off for signing up with them, I was able to use the code CJHOLIDAY for an additional $5.00 off and on top of all that I should get a 10% credit back into my Upromise account. Upromise is a savings account that vendors offer money credits back by shopping through their link. Every month my savings get transferred right into my bank account. Shop and Save!!!!

The final damages? $29.65! That is a better than 20% discount off of their list price! I hope my mom doesn't read this!
