Who wouldn't want to stretch their dollar when it comes to theater tickets, since they can tend to be pricey? Since theater is my passion, I want to see as many shows as possible without breaking the bank.

You can choose from several drop-down options for major cities that you may be close to or may be traveling to. Pageant of the Masters Laguna Beach Valentine's Discount

Peter Pan Takes me to Neverland!

As a gift to my family, I purchased tickets to see Peter Pan produced by ThreeSixty Entertainment for the day after Christmas. It was a most magical production presented "in the round" with CGI or computer generated imagery that created London all around and above us. We were literally enveloped in the action as Peter and the Darling children flew through London and Michael and John took us under water to swim with the Mermaids in Neverland. It was a true rendition of JM Barrie's written book with technology and whimsy blended together into a fantastical escape to the place where Pan won't grow up.

The use of puppetry for Nana the dog and mechanics for a man-peddled crocodile made of wooden coat hangers only added to the whimsical nature. There was also swordplay, acrobatics, aerial ballet on long fabric ropes called Aerial Tissu and of course wonderful acting.

At one point, perhaps close to the end of the show, I realized that I was literally sitting there with a smile on my face and had probably been in that state for the entire show! To some I may have looked daft, but it was the smile in my heart shining through.

Merry Christmas to me! When the show closes in California on January 21, it will move on to Atlanta where it will run until March 20 and then on to Chicago where it will open on April 29, 2011. If you have an opportunity to catch this production, you won't be disappointed!

Next to Normal

Sunday afternoon, my daughter and I endured the rain and light fog to journey up to Los Angeles to see the musical "Next to Normal".  We had previously seen it on Broadway and enjoyed it so much that I thought it would be a nice Mother, Daughter day. Not surprisingly, the traffic was slower but steady which suited me just fine. I was hoping that on a Sunday afternoon it would be light, but I wasn't sure how the rain would affect the drive.

We were there early enough to grab a yummy sandwich  before the show. My error, saying that I would just leave the umbrella in the car in the parking garage. As soon as we stepped out onto the Ahmanson Terrace, the skies opened up and pelted us with moisture!

Alice Ripley starred in the show as she had on Broadway. Although she was the only original from the cast we saw, this was the role for which she won a Tony for Best Actress. The show is so powerful and engaging and it is truly one you should take the opportunity to see. All the cast members have strong and powerful singing voices and they interacted with each other brilliantly to move the plot along.

I loved our mezzanine box seats, and to think I only paid $20.00 each for them through the box office's special Hot Tix offering. I highly recommend this option if you want to see great shows at great prices!

Going Out of Business

On Saturday, to kill time before I saw that crazy show "Bat Boy" (which, by the way was pretty crazy!) I went to the Mall across the road from the theatre.  I was reminded that Saks Fifth Avenue was closing in that location by big sign spinners on the street. Wow! Why not? I have only stepped foot in that store twice in the 28 or so years that I have lived here. Even in New York I only went in for the experience, the thrill, the ambience, never expecting to buy anything.

But this was a "Store Closing" sale! Maybe now was my chance! What could I buy so that I could have bragging rights? Bright signs decorated every rack, every table -  "50% off lowest marked price", "70% off lowest marked price". Had I died and gone to heaven? EXCEPT when I looked at the price tags. A beautiful blouse $328.00, an interesting handbag $498.00! Are you kidding me?  I am not one of the Housewives of Orange County! Who can afford this stuff?

I finally found an area where there might be hope?  Underwear, bras, slips and nylons beckoned me.  I could use some new nylons.  I settled on a pair of Spanx, double duty leg trimming, tummy flattening hosiery. List price? - $38.00. What the heck!  I bought a couple pair at 50% off and excitedly called my husband to tell him that I had actually bought something at Saks! 

Now I can wear overpriced undergarments and even brag about it!
